Our rigorous selection process aims to identify applicants who subscribe to  NXTHVN’s mission and values, and push us to think in innovative ways about our own community. NXTHVN welcomes submissions on a rolling basis during our annual open call, which will re-launch in the summer of 2020.

Fellowship Application

Eligibility & Non-Discrimination

  • Applicants must be 21 years old by the start of the Fellowship and can not be enrolled in an academic program or other residency during the Fellowship year.
  • Applicants are not required to hold an art degree or to have received any formal training.
  • Studio Fellows are required to reside in New Haven for the duration of their Fellowship. Applicants may be based in the US or internationally. PLEASE NOTE: at this time NXTHVN does not cover travel or relocation costs.
  • NXTHVN encourages and welcomes applicants of all backgrounds to apply for the Fellowships. We do not discriminate based on age, race, sex, sexual orientation, disability, religion, marital status, or nation of origin in our admission policies.

Selection Procedure

A panel consisting of prominent artists, curators, museum professionals, and alumni from NXTHVN’s network will make admissions selections based primarily on an applicant’s ability to clearly express their desire to join our program at this particular point in their career. Interviews typically take place in the fall, and the final cohort is announced shortly thereafter.

Apprenticeship Application

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a local high school student by the start of the Apprenticeship.
  • Applicants must be available to work after school between 5-10 hours each week.
  • Applicants are not required to have received any formal arts training

Applicants to the Apprenticeship Program are required to submit:

  • A statement of interest
  • Artwork and/or creative samples
  • Answer questions regarding skills you’d like to acquire at NXTHVN
  • Three references

Selection Procedure

If your application is selected, you will first be invited to participate in a group interview with your peers to assess your fit within our program.  Following the group interview, if you are further selected to the next round, you will be invited for an individual interview with our Selection Committee.

FAQ

What are the Fellowship dates?

The 2021-22 Fellowship runs from June 2021 – May 2022.

What is the size of the studio space?

Each Studio Fellow will be provided with 24-hr access to a private studio space, between 600 – 1,000 sq ft, in the NXTHVN building. Studios will be assigned by NXTHVN.

Curatorial Fellows will be provided with a dedicated office and resource library for the duration of the Fellowship year.

What opportunities will I have to showcase my work during the Fellowship year?

NXTHVN founders and board members assist in scheduling regular studio visits with major arts institutions, curators, collectors, and arts and culture organizations. In addition, Studio Fellows will participate in an annual exhibition at the NXTHVN gallery, and bi-annual Open Studio events in the spring and fall of each year.

Will I need to find accommodations if I am relocating to New Haven?

NXTHVN Fellows must reside in or relocate to New Haven for the duration of the Fellowship.

NXTHVN has some housing on campus made available to fellows at a partially subsidized rate. We will also provide a list of recommended accommodations, and work with participants to secure affordable housing for the duration of the program.

Can I mail a hard copy of my application materials to the NXTHVN office?

No. Applicants must submit their application through Submittable, our online application form.

I am an artist with foreign citizenship. Am I eligible to apply?

International artists are welcome to apply for the NXTHVN Fellowship. However, NXTHVN will not necessarily be able to cover visa and/or travel expenses at this time. International applications must also secure their own documentation for status within the USA for the duration of the Fellowship.

Will I receive confirmation that my application has been received?

Once you have completed and submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email. Applicants will be notified of the results via email. Please ensure the email address provided on the application form is active.

How do I pay the application fee?

NXTHVN requires a non-refundable application fee per application, submitted through the online application form. Once you have completed and submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email that will direct you to a link to pay the application fee. This fee must be paid at the time of submission, as you will lose access to the payment page once the application has been closed.
